A NEW exhibition at Wotton Heritage Centre features food shops in Wotton-under-Edge from the past as well as those selling food currently.

Called Animal, Vegetable, Mineral, the display uses photographs and old advertisements to illustrate the history of various butchers, grocers and greengrocers in the town.

Mary George, for the exhibitions committee, said: "Perhaps the display should be subtitled 'Food, glorious food' as charts and pictures show the foods sold in previous eras and what is on offer today.

"Foods may affect our well being in various ways, and what we decide to eat is a choice of importance to us all."

This exhibition is in connection with the British Associations' Science Week in March, and runs from February to April at the centre in The Chipping.

The Heritage Centre is open from Tuesdays to Fridays, 10am-1pm; 2pm-4pm; and Saturdays, 10am-1pm.

Admission to the museum is free, and it is run by volunteers - donations, however small, are always welcome to help with running costs.

Next week, during the school term break, the heritage centre is embarking on a new project, in association with Under the Edge Arts.

Loving Where You Live is a series of four free workshops for children from eight to 13, in which Wotton's history will be explored.

The workshops feature artefacts from the centre and will involve the participants in story-telling, art and craft, including spinning , weaving and creating a frieze of Wotton buildings.

Local artists, with volunteers from the heritage and arts centres, will be running the sessions.

Anyone interested in booking the few remaining places should contact Jo Williams via Wotton Heritage Centre on 01453 521541.
