A NEW supermarket in Yate will not be built until next year after Tesco announced further delays.

The company had hoped to start building a Tesco Extra replacement store in East Walk earlier this year but had to postpone work while a detailed planning application was agreed.

Tesco has now announced that building work will not start on the new store until early 2011.

A spokesman said: "We are looking to start works on-site in the summer with the relocation of the bus station, demolition of The Swan public house, re-organisation of part of the car park and the highway improvements.

"Work on the new store will start early next year."

He said a temporary store would be ready for Tesco to move into early next year so that demolition of the old store can start.

Initially it was hoped the existing Tesco supermarket, which has become too small and outdated, would be demolished at the start of this year and a temporary store possibly located in the overflow car park would be up and running by now. The new flagship supermarket, which will be built on stilts over extra car parking spaces, was due to open before the Christmas shopping countdown.

Revised plans for the supermarket development have also been submitted to South Gloucestershire Council.

The spokesman added: "The application seeks to amend the originally approved scheme so that the service yard works more efficiently.

"This will lead to less likelihood of delivery lorries queuing on Kennedy Way and lower noise levels within the service yard and on the ramp. The ramp and delivery yard will still be enclosed by an acoustic screen.

"The store size and car parking numbers remain the same."
