THE delivery centre behind Yate's main post office is to be relocated, raising fears that collecting parcels will be chaotic for hundreds of residents.

Royal Mail wants to move from behind the South Parade office in the shopping centre to allow for more space, although no site for a new centre has yet been announced.

The company also plans to move its collection point and that caused concern among town councillors last week.

The move means postal items which cannot be delivered through people's letter boxes, because they are too big or need to be signed for, will be taken to the new centre for collection.

Councillors fear that the new centre will be out of town and are worried that residents could face problems collecting their parcels and packages.

The current collection point is open until 2pm on weekdays and councillors think that a similar closing time at an out of town centre will cause problems.

Cllr Chris Wilmore said: "It will be fine for people with cars but if you want to collect a parcel and do not have a car, some people will not be able to do it.

"It will be no good for people who work either but people who work and do not have a car are going to have some difficulty getting there.

"I am worried about the accessibility of this service. At least we should make sure that the new centre is on a bus route."

The post office itself in South Parade will not be affected by the move.
