NORTHAVON MP Steve Webb has proved he is a first when it comes to innovative ideas and use of technology.

The Liberal Democrat has won the first Hansard Society Innovation Award for the politician who has made best use of new technology to encourage participation in politics.

He was presented with the award, which is a new category for Channel 4 Political Awards, on Tuesday by chairman of the Hansard Society, the Right Hon Lord Holme of Cheltenham.

Mr Webb told the Gazette: "In one sense this is an award for anorak of the year! On a more serious side, a great deal of youngsters use technology and this is a good way to get their views.

"However, it is just one of the things I do and I do not want older people who do not have access to technology to feel left out. "

Clare Ettinghausen (CORR), director of the Hansard Society, said: "Our shortlist of three MPs - Anne Campbell, Tim Collins and Steve Webb - have all contributed to the development of new and exciting ways to connect with their constituents.

The final decision was hard, but Steve Webb is the very deserving winner for his innovative use of text messaging and email to gauge his constituents' opinions on topical issues."
