THE winners of a competition to get Wickwar blooming have been announced.

The village’s first flower tub festival took place in July and the winners have now been picked by a panel of judges.

First place went to Penny Proudfoot from High Street, second went to Mrs Roberts also from High Street and third went to Donald Bennett, of Cotswold View.

Businesses also took part in the community planting scheme, including Wickwar Social Club whose entry was based on the England football colours.

Alexander Hosea Primary School also entered the competition and pupils created colourful tubs of flowers.

In the infants section, rosettes were presented in first place to Abbie Jackman for her Slvanian surprise tub. Second was Lucy Partridge with her Snow White tub and third came Lexie Hill.

In the junior section, Megan Jackman won first for her beautiful gardener's delight tub, followed closely by Georgina Allan's amazing Hot Air Balloon tub and Thomas Cant in third with his handpainted wellington boots planted up with flowers and named recycle and re-use.

Local horticulturist and judge Jo Woodcraft said: "The tubs entered were of a very high standard and showed superb creativity in terms of the children's ideas and their choice of plants."

Get Wickwar Blooming organiser Lesley Gittings said: "The organisers would really thank everyone who has taken part in this year’s competition and produced such lovely baskets for everyone to enjoy. We hope this will be an annual event."
