THE snow was settling, the chestnuts were roasting and the carol singing was in full swing as Chipping Sodbury turned back time for its annual Victorian Evening.

Thousands braved the freezing temperatures on Friday evening to have a go on traditional fairground rides, try tempting treats and enjoy a line-up of festive entertainment.

There were songs from pupils at local schools, stalls selling Christmas goodies and sweet treats and games including a coconut shy and raffle.

Mulled wine and mince pies were aplenty and inside Chipping Sodbury Baptist Church teas and cakes helped to keep everyone warm.

But the biggest attraction was Father Christmas himself, who was pulled in a glittering sleigh through the High Street and Broad Street to the delight of excited children.

Vice-chairman of the organising committee, Brian Hardy, said the night was a considerable success.

"We had several thousand people turn up and it was definitely better than last year, probably helped by the weather because it was dry for most of the evening," he said.

"Overall it was very well supported and traders and charity stalls did a brisk business.

"On behalf of the committee I would like to thank the organisations and traders, and Steve Le Fevre and Peter Rowell from BBC Radio Bristol who were there for the first time, as well as all the people who attended.

"An extremely good evening was had by all."
