NEW support for adults with learning difficulties is to be offered by a voluntary organisation in Cam.

The GL11 Community Project has announced that it will start sessions for adults with mild to moderate learning difficulties in the former Glebe House Day Centre that was closed by Gloucestershire County Council as part of its budget cutting programme.

The former dementia centre is next door to the GL11 offices in Fairmead, Cam, and after widespread public consultation and negotiations with the county council the community organisation has been given the go-ahead to run sessions in the building.

Ann Wheeler, GL11 project manager, said: "We’ve been consulting with the local community for several months now including a very successful and well attended open day in July where we welcomed over 100 people.

"This gave an opportunity to have a look around the whole building, but most importantly it gave visitors a chance to tell us what they would like to see available for adults with mild to moderate learning disabilities."

The new sessions will start in late October and will run for two hours in the morning and two hours in the afternoon on Tuesdays, with lunch also available.

However Mrs Wheeler told the Gazette they hoped to extend the amount of sessions they run next year.

"We will start with just Tuesdays until Christmas when we will review how it has gone, this will include discussion with those attending to see what they’ve enjoyed and what they’d like to do next - then extend the days of the week starting in the New Year."

The emphasis of the sessions will be on community integration, learning new skills and citizenship.

GL11 will be running information mornings on Monday, October 3 and Monday, October 17 between 10am to 12pm for people to pop in and find out more. For more information visit the GL11 office at Fairmead, Cam, ring 01453 548530 or visit the website www.gl11.org.uk
