A DAREDEVIL dad has set himself the challenge of doing the highest UK bungee jump to raise money for a fundraising appeal.

Craig Chandler is planning to do a 400 foot high bungee jump to raise money for Wotton resident Brad Hedges, who broke his neck in a motocross accident and is now paralysed from the waist down.

His girlfriend Naomi Watkins has been fundraising to buy him a special off-road electric wheelchair and so far the whole community has got involved in the charity efforts.

Craig used to race motocross when he was younger and his fiancee is Naomi’s sister, so he felt he wanted to do something to help raise the cash.

"I have seen a lot of bad accidents in motocross and when we heard about Brad I felt I wanted to do something to help," said Craig, 35, of Berkeley.

He explored lots of options for daring extreme events and finally found out about a one-off event held in Chepstow each year in which the UK Bungee Club does a 400 foot jump. Their usual highest jump is 300 foot and the standard UK height is 160 foot.

"It is very heard to visualise how high 400 foot is," said Craig. "But it is very high. The Clifton Suspension Bridge looks high and that is only 250 feet up."

He admits he is a little nervous, but is confident he’ll do the jump – if only to impress his workmates at Renishaw in Woodchester.

"I will definitely do it, but closer to the time I’ll be feeling the nerves. My partner is probably more worried than me."

Craig’s jump takes place on Saturday, October 8. He has so far collected £1,000 in sponsorship, but would like to raise more. A sponsorship form is available at Tumpy Green Equestrian Centre on the A38 or email Craig on craigchandler@msn.com with your name, postcode and amount you wish to donate.
