A DATE has been set for the opening of a new night-time venue in Yate.

Waves nightclub will open on Saturday, October 29 (from 7.30pm) with a family-friendly party until 10pm when a DJ will play a set into the night.

The club, on East Walk in Yate Shopping Centre, will be located in the former Riley’s snooker club and previous to that, the popular Spirals nightclub.

It is being opened by Yate businessman Mark Coles and his father Chris.

Mark told the Gazette this week: "Everything is going really well. We have a lot of decorating to do before we open and can’t get everything we wanted to do finished in time but it will be modern and clean with a second bar and DJ booth.

"We aim to create a sunken dance floor and booths eventually as we have three phases to the decorating work."

Mr Coles said he was pleased with the enthusiastic response he had received so far about the opening.

"We have about 800 people on our Facebook page," he said. "So the support seems to be there. We have put in a lot of hard work but are looking forward to opening something that Yate needs."

The club will open every Thursday, Friday and Saturday night until 2.30am but will open in the daytime as well for community events. Already booked in are Zumba and line dancing classes and the district’s court service will hold restraint courses at the venue. Mr Coles is also planning to hold fortnightly tea and dancing sessions for the elderly every other Tuesday.

Although the venue has been long-awaited by many young people in Yate, a licensing application for the venue sparked an outcry from residents of Swanfield and Sundridge Park who fear late night noise and disturbance when it opens.
