Review: Rambert Dance Company Seven for a Secret tour at Bath Theatre Royal.

When audiences turn out to watch a performance by Rambert Dance Company they understandably are hoping to see some of the best contemporary dance in the UK today, from a company that is known mainly for its bold, risk-taking and beautiful work.

We were not disappointed, however without doubt the best was saved until last. It is not to say the first two dances were not good – but in my eyes they fell slightly short of the mark. The first dance called Roses, was beautiful and nicely danced – but bold and risk-taking? Certainly not and for a routine about romance it was lacking in feeling.

The second routine Seven for a secret, never to be told, was a fantastically fun routine and this time clever and imaginative and bold. Set in fantasy land with children let loose and having fun the dance captured the playfulness of children and you could almost have mistaken the adult dancers as young children. The orchestra used a range of instruments such as wind chimes, cow bells and wood blocks to create a magical atmosphere, however although enjoyable it didn’t showcase the kind of athletic dance we have come to expected from Rambert.

It was Monolith, a dance routine inspired by places of monumental greatness, that was truly breath-taking.

It was simply the choreography and standard of dance that set this out above the rest. Dancers created beautiful lines and stunning patterns. The fluidity was endless and the dancers showed off why Rambert is the best contemporary company in Britain.

The Rambert Dance Company Seven for a Secret tour is on at the Bath Theatre Royal until Saturday, October 22.
