FIREFIGHTERS rescued a pet hamster after a fire at a home in Uley.

Gloucestershire Fire and Rescue said they were called to a property in the village at 5pm on Wednesday, March 7 after a tumble dryer caught fire in a garage.

Two appliances from Dursley Fire Station attended the scene along with the Great Western Ambulance Service.

A spokesman for the fire service confirmed that after extinguishing the fire, firefighters entered the property and rescued a pet hamster.

The spokesman said: "The fire was quickly brought under control but two occupants had to be treated for smoke inhalation by an ambulance crew at the scene. The family hamster was also rescued.

"This incident highlights the importance of having a working smoke alarm as the alarm was sounding when the fire crews arrived."
