YEAR 11 pupils at Katharine Lady Berkeley School in Wotton-under-Edge celebrated some outstanding GCSE results last Thursday.

The anxious students arrived at 9am to collect the results of exams they sat in May and June, marking the end of five years of hard work.

Joe Avis, 16, said: "It was so hard to get to sleep last night. I arrived early to catch up with my friends before we got our results.

We were all really nervous, but excited too. We’re all going to go and celebrate together now."

He added: "I was really happy with my results, I got one A*, six As, two Bs and two Cs. I’m planning to stay here to do maths, biology, geography and PE for A-level and then I’d like to go on to do geography at university."

The school performed well overall, with 85 per cent of pupils achieving five or more passes at grades A* to C and 72 per cent achieving five A* to C grades, including English and maths.

Headteacher Andrew Harris said there were some spectacular individual results, with 38 per cent of entries resulting in A and A* grades and around 90 per cent of students achieving at least three levels of progress in English and maths.

He added: "These results reflect the hard work and commitment of the pupils and staff at the school and provide an excellent foundation for the pupils’ transition to the sixth form or to college courses."

He said about 60 per cent of pupils are expected to stay at the school to complete their AS and A Levels next year.
