Steve Webb wins in Thornbury and Yate

STEVE Webb has won the first election in the newly created Thornbury and Yate Constituency.

Mr Webb, the Liberal Democrat candidate, secured 25,032 votes, more than an 8,000 majority over Conservative Matthew Riddle, who won 17,916 votes.

Roxanne Egan, the 20-year-old Labour candidate, attracted just 3,385 votes.

Mr Webb said: “It is an honour and a privilege to be the first MP for the new Thornbury and Yate Constituency.”

The new constituency, which was created from the former Northavon Constituency, had a turnout of 75 percent.

Other candidates in the seat were Jenny Knight, UKIP with 1,709 votes, Thomas Beacham, Independents Federation UK with 126 votes and Anthony Clements, Independent with 58 votes.
