A HIGH number of worshippers took to Cam Peak on Good Friday as part of the Procession of Witness.

Starting on Castle Street in Dursley, a crowd which reached over 400 people by the end of the event set off in the morning towards St George’s Church in Cam before taking on the ascent of the local landmark in brilliant sunshine.

As they went volunteers shared the weight of an eight foot cross made of teak which was eventually erected on the top of the steep hill, with four people needed at anyone time to lift the large piece of wood.

On the way the procession stopped ten times for bible readings, hymns and prayers.

The walk was organised by Cam and Dursley District Churches Together, an organisation uniting over ten churches from the area with Dursley Methodist Church reverend Jon Emmett convening the service.

One worshipper on the day was Ronnie Harding who told the Gazette the event was a great success.

“There was a tremendous number of people there,” she said.

“We were so lucky because it was a good day and so many young families turned up.”

Afterwards, the procession moved on to St Bartholomew’s Church in Coaley where a frugal lunch was held.
