A NEW garden project has started at Cam school boost students’ confidence and is looking for volunteers to help.

As part of a push to engage and inspire Year 7 pupils into all aspects of learning, the Peak Academy in Cam has launched the project to help pupils’ self-esteem, co-operation, communication skills and resilience.

The special school for children with behavioural, social and emotional difficulties on Drake Lane has already introduced a number of outdoor activities like bench building, painting, making a bird table, pond development and management, designing and making mini wooden models of houses, decorative woodwork and poster designs.

Headteacher Richard Lewis said the vision was to create an outdoor learning area which enriches and develops the whole school curriculum.

“The garden and its up keep will be an integral part of learning and school life,” he said.

“Pupils would use a kitchen garden develop knowledge of wildlife ecosystems and habitats learn about seasons develop an awareness of skills and processes learn to respect and sustain nature and create links with the local community."

Year 7 pupils currently work in Dursley Town Centre on Friday mornings with the Dursley in Bloom team and help plant and maintain the floral displays around town.

However the summer project to create a garden for the pupils needs volunteers, with both individuals and community groups being sought to help with initial construction.
