A HAIL storm and a short burst of rain was not enough to dampen the spirits of the several hundred who turned out to enjoy Cam Beer Festival at the weekend.

Tickets were quickly sold out for the event’s fourth year, which raises money for Cam Sports Club.

Thanks to an army of volunteers there were 30 different beers available from across the country as well as several ciders on Saturday, August 4pm.

While a short hailstorm and rainfall may have led to the adjacent cricket match being cancelled, 750 turned up to the festival to enjoy the day, with the sun breaking out again soon after.

Entertainment was provided in the form of bands from 6pm onwards until the end of the evening at 11pm.

Cam Sports Club treasurer, James Darby said he was pleased the event was a sell out after increasing the number of tickets from last year.

“It went very well, the best we have had so far,” he said.

“There were lots of people clamouring for tickets in the run up to the event. People are already asking when next year’s tickets will be on sale.

Mr Darby added that he had even heard that an ex-Cam resident who now lives in Canada had rearranged his visit back home so he could make the festival.

“I think it is proving more and more popular is because it’s local and the majority of people can walk which is great because they can meet people they haven’t seen in a long time,” he said.

“There’s a relaxed atmosphere, a reasonable amount of space. There’s never any hostility so people can bring their kids.”

While he does not yet know the final figure raised yet, Mr Darby said he believed they had gone past the £6,000 they raised last year, calling the funds “essential” to keep the volunteer run club going.
