A COMMITTEE that embarked on a project to place hanging baskets in a town each Summer wants to pay thanks to those who offered support this time around.

Wotton in Bloom have declared this year’s flowers Wotton-under-Edge’s best yet, despite early funding issues that threatened the whole project.

Sue Hunt, who chairs the Wotton in Bloom Committee has been overwhelmed by compliments coming her way.

She said: “Nobody can fail to have noticed the amazing baskets in the town this year and so many people have said how magnificent they look and how wonderfully they smell.

“The committee couldn’t have done it without a considerable amount of help and support from many people such as the town’s Chamber of Trade and the Town Council who have been our partners in this.”

The Wotton in Bloom committee are a small team of volunteers who raise funds each year to place over 100 hanging baskets and flower filled troughs in Church Street, Long Street, High Street and Market Street throughout the town. All of the money is raised locally.

Mrs Hunt continued: “There have also been donations from Renishaw and Magnox as well as from several individuals. There were the shoppers who responded so generously to our rain soaked street collection and others who have bought our jams, chutneys and pickles at the Charities Fair.

“And then, of course, there are the traders who have bought baskets and local businesses, clubs and societies who have sponsored baskets for the charity shops.

“On the behalf of the whole town they have our sincere thanks. This is our fifth year and it is our best yet. There were times when we thought we weren’t going to make it but we have won through.”
