A SPECIAL go-kart and helmets have been donated to designated play area outside Wotton-under-Edge for children with special needs.

The two-seater vehicle, which is worth around £500, allows more able children to drive the kart and give less able children a ride around the park as a passenger.

The Bournstream Trust provides a unique outdoor space for play for children with special needs and their families and relies on charitable donations to keep the site running as it only charges users a nominal fee.

Facilities include giant sandpits, swings, waterplay area, football field, climbing frames a wildlife hide, slides, a cowboy wagon and a pirate ship.

The equipment, including a number of helmets, was donated by Liverpool Victoria Insurance as staff members have become regular users of the centre.

Spokesman Adam Brown said they were delighted to donate a brand new go-kart to Bournstream.

“It is a fantastic place where children with special needs can have fun and play safely,” he said.

“I hope that everyone who visits the picnic and play site will enjoy using the go-kart for years to come.”

Bournstream Trust volunteer Lucy Stanley said they were very pleased with the kart and very grateful for the donation.

“A lot of local groups are really good to Bournstream, we benefit a lot from local support but it is essential as we do not get any other funding.”
