AN EVENT to be held next week will launch an appeal for £120,000 to restore a set of 10 historic bells and their tower.

It will take place at the Great Hall, in Berkeley Castle, on September 19, beginning at 7.30pm.

John Berkeley and Lord Cope of Berkeley will be present on the evening, initiating the campaign to raise funds for repairing the bells, one of which dates back to 1700.

Though some of the bells are still in working order, many are out of use due to a crack in the bell tower, the first item on the list of repairs.

Another issue is water seeping into the tower and rusting the base of the bells’ iron frame.

A number of cheques will be handed over at the event to kick off the fundraising process. Ringing from the bells will be heard from Berkeley Church as guests enter the castle.

Two of the bells were installed in 1921 to commemorate two local bell ringers who perished in the First World War.

The hall has a capacity of 150 people. Those wanting to attend the event should email John Cornock on john.cornock@yahoo.co.uk.
