A COMMUNITY centre is hoping to get a project for a new cinema off the ground.

With community cinemas increasing in popularity, the Chantry Centre, in Dursley, is looking for people interested in setting up one of its own.

More than 600 community cinemas now operate around the country, where they are particularly valued in small towns and rural communities, giving access to the those unable to travel and catering for a wide range of ages and tastes.

Chantry Centre spokesperson Adrian Judge said that the centre was keen for anybody with an interest to get involved.

He said: “The Chantry Centre has the potential to be an excellent community cinema providing films for all ages especially for those who find it difficult to travel. Dursley used to have a cinema and it would be great to be able to have this again in the town.

Setting up a community cinema involves all kinds of decision such as what films to put on, what type of license to apply for as well as ensuring the right equipment and stewards are in place.

The more people we can involve the easier it will be, and we can ensure that the best is made from this wonderful opportunity.”

This comes as part of a larger project involving the Chantry Centre working in partnership with World Jungle to establish an active community resource used by all sections of the community.

A meeting will be held on Sunday, September 28 at 3.30pm for people interested in finding out more.

For more information on getting involved either attend the meeting or contact Ben Ward at World Jungle on 07889 512644 or via info@worldjungle.org.uk.
