A POLITICAL party is encouraging cycling throughout the county following the Tour of Britain.

On the same day as the cycle race came through parts of Gloucestershire unanimous support was given to a Liberal Democrat proposal to promote cycling in by improving cycle routes and cycle parking.

At a full Council Meeting in Shire Hall on September 10, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for highways and flood cllr Paul Hodgkinson successfully put forward plans that would see cycling be given a much higher priority in Gloucestershire.

Cllr Hodgkinson said: “I’m delighted that we got cross-party support for wanting to promote cycling across the county. We know the health benefits of cycling and especially now as the council has a public health remit.

“I now look forward to seeing the start of a proper strategic overview that links cycle paths together and looks at how someone cycles safely from A to B.

“There are some lovely areas around the county and a more joined up approach is what ‘s needed to really get Gloucestershire on its bike.”

He continued: “My calls for a study through existing resources to identify those routes where there are barriers to safe cycling and the costs involved with removing such barriers have been recognised as important by all members of the council.

“Once the study has been undertaken it will then be reported back to the Environment & Community Scrutiny Committee of which I am a member.

“I will then be keen to work with colleagues on this committee in suggesting ways how this study might be taken forward.”

Cllr Iain Dobie seconded the Lib Dem motion.

He said: “Cycling provision should not be an add-on or an afterthought. Safe and well connected routes will get people out of their cars and onto their bicycles.

“Let’s make space for cycling.”
