A WOTTON-UNDER-EDGE pub and steakhouse has made it onto the CAMRA Good Beer Guide for the first time since it was taken over by new owners.

The Falcon Inn, in Church Street, was taken over by Andrew Starling, 29, of Wotton, two years ago.

Since then, the place has been transformed from a traditional pub to a combination of bar and steakhouse, selling a wide range of real ales with an emphasis on local produce.

CAMRA - the Campaign for Real Ale - compile their annual Good Beer Guide by attending bars around the country in the form of mystery guests.

This guest assesses the various bars on the range and quality of their beers, level of service and ambiance.

Mr Starling said: “It’s great. The books just been released now and we heard for the first time a couple of weeks ago.

“All the previous bars I’ve been in have been in the book but when I took this place on it was really different to what we’ve turned it into.

“The place was a lot more old fashioned and real ale was non-existent. It’s been a fantastic experience.”

Despite successfully entering the good beer guide for 2015, Mr Starling has no intention of becoming complacent.

He said: “We haven’t been open a very long time but it’s been really well received. It’s full most nights of the week.

“The next step is to stay in the good beer guide and keep the standards as high as we can.”

Most of the beers used at the bar are taken from microbreweries within a 20 mile radius. Beef used in the steaks comes from Mr Starlings’ family farm.

The CAMRA Good Beer Guide is released each year. The 2015 edition is available now.

The guide includes 4,500 of the best real ale pubs in the UK and information on every real ale brewery currently operating and their key beers.

Buying direct from CAMRA helps them invest directly into campaigning for real ale, community pubs and drinkers' rights.
