A FIVE-YEAR-OLD pupil in Wotton-under-Edge has won £500 for her school after winning a creative writing competition.

Angharad Turner, who attends BlueCoat Primary School, entered a national creative writing competition and beat hundreds of applicants from schools all over the country.

The competition, held by Cartridgesave.co.uk, was judged by popular children’s author Sam Hay and gave the winners in three age categories a prize of £500 for their school.

Applicants were invited to write a new festive classic that uses winter or Christmas the the key theme in the form of a short story, poem or drawing.

Angharad won with her short story ‘Christmas Boy’ in the four to six year-old category, telling a festive tale of a magic experiment in North Pole Primary School and how a boy called Sam Christmas landed a new role.

The judging for the competition took place on Monday, December and 8 and Angharad was awarded on Monday, December 15.

SamHay judged all three categories and visited the schools to read each winning story in an assembly and gave Angharad a goodie bag worth £50 as a prize.

The author said: “This story hooked me from its brilliant first line. It is a great concept and made me smile a lot.”

The £500 will go towards books and writing materials at the school on Symn Lane.

The managing director of cartridgesave.co.uk, Ian Cowley, said: “We have been bowled over by the quality of the stories and the imagination of the children and want to thank everyone who took part.

“The collection of stories in the e-book will make great bedtime story reading for Christmas time and beyond.”
