A COMMUNITY centre in Dursley launched a new range of events for people of all ages.

World Jungle, based at the Chantry Centre, in Long Street, showcased their Community Hub for the very first time on Thursday, January 29.

The event included a range of activities from head massages and manicures to dance lessons and table tennis, all to encourage people in the area to get out of their house and be active.

The hub project was developed from World Jungle’s ‘Full of Life’ Community Fair event held last year which was attended by over 200 people.

The programme of activities will be tailored based on what those attending the hub want. A range of different activities are part of World Jungle’s schedule currently, including dancing, tai chi, bowls, table tennis, dancing and more.

In between sessions guests can enjoy teas and coffees with cakes and have a chat with friends.

World Jungle coordinator Claire Fern said: “It’s a community event for people that don’t get the opportunity to come out very often and meet other people."

“It’s open to anybody, and the response has been really positive, with everyone enjoying all the activities and a lot of people wanting to try new things.”

Two ladies who were making the most of the table tennis were Margaret Chappenden, 73, of Cam, and Margaret Whannell, 82, of Dursley.

Mrs Chappenden said: “I think it’s a really great idea for a group initiative and good that they’re trying to appeal to all ages.

“One reason it’s good is that it gives people of our age group the opportunity to exercise. There is a lot out there but some of it is a bit severe for us.”

Mrs Whannel added: “It’s been very good. I’ve had my nails done and now I’m excelling at this. It’s good for the health.”

Also in attendance at the event was Phil Sullivan, a consultant for the office of the police and crime commissioner, which awarded World Jungle some funding for the Community Hub as part of their ‘Older but not Overlooked’ scheme.

Mr Sullivan said: “We want less people to be victims of crime and the lasting effects of crime.

“By taking part in things like this people are connecting to agencies and services, and in the process becoming more confident and active.”

The hub will now be open every Thursday from 10am to 12pm.
