THE assistant to Gloucestershire’s crime commissioner attended a community centre in Cam for a spot of lunch – and announced further funding for the facility.

Assistant chief executive to the Police and Crime Commissioner Richard Bradley visited GL11 Community Hub, in Cam, on Thursday, February 26, after the office of the PCC awarded the centre £10,000 for the second year running.

The money will go towards the cafe at the hub, which is run by volunteers. Mr Lewis said he was proud to announce the second year of funding and valued the work they were doing.

The cafe at GL11 gives residents the opportunity to eat a decent meal or have a cup of tea while socialising with others in the area.

The PCC supports the cafe through its Older but not Overlooked scheme, which aims to give the most vulnerable in society confidence through the promotion of social activity.

Mr Bradley sat with regulars in the cafe and tucked into a pie, but had the chance to offer a few words about the good carried out by the hub.

“Last year we put £10,000 from the commissioner’s fund to support the start up of a really great community based building," he said.

"I’m proud to announce a further £10,000 will be donated for this year. We really value the work been done here – and seeing these activities that bring people together is really important to us.

“Seeing this place fills me with pride. We’re just so pleased to be in association with GL11.”

Jenni Willis, of Stroud, is the new cook at the hub, leading a team of volunteers to keep the cafe going.

At the time of Mr Bradley’s visit she was working hard to serve more than 30 people.

“All the staff here are incredible and it’s a lovely place to work, and the kitchen is great of most occasions.

“I feel like food can be a great leveller and can really help with developing communities.”
