A GROUP of students from an engineering club at a Dursley school have transformed a decayed old car and returned it to full working order.

The group, from Rednock School and called 'The Redmechs', restored the classic Citroën Dyane under the guidance of science teacher Ben Hall.

The students' work came to completion just two weeks ago when the car passed its MoT test at a garage in Cambridge.

Mr Hall said: “Although longer than planned, the project has been a huge success, bringing together students, teachers, technicians, enthusiasts and experts from across the region.

“Working together, the students have shown initiative to adapt ideas and overcome problems and taken responsibility for the development of their initial ideas whilst learning new skills and applying them to unfamiliar situations.

“We are now seeking to carry this work on and involve the broader community by taking engineering into our feeder primary schools.”

Since passing its MoT, the car has been on a test drive to the Lake District and back via the Welsh mountains and East Devon, clocking up over a thousand miles.

The club also hope to take the car to a couple of classic car shows later in the year.

The ‘Redmechs’ mechanical engineering club began in 2013 when Renishaw and Rednock co-funded their first project to convert a Ford Transit into a ‘mobile laboratory’.

Mr Hall said: “As a Science Specialist School in a region when technical, scientific and engineering industries offer a multitude of employment opportunities, we view promoting Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths as a key priority, both within Rednock and across the broader community.”
