TODAY is St George's Day - England's National Day in honour of the patron saint of England.
St George's emblem, a red cross on a white background, is the flag of England, a part of the British flag and was adopted by Richard The Lion Heart and brought to England in the 12th century.
St George is known throughout the world as the dragon-slaying patron saint of England, but very little is known of the real St George.
April 23 is thought to be the day of St George's martyrdom in 303.
