A WELL-USED car park under threat in Dursley is a sharp reminder that sometimes the things we think about least are the things that can affect us the most.

The car park in Long Street was always a temporary solution to a problem, but its continuing usage over the past several years is as clear a message as any that it is a problem that was never solved.

If you are a driver, think for a moment about where you park your own car. When at home, maybe it’s left in a drive or just on the street. At work, perhaps you use an office car park.

Or perhaps it’s a public car park like the one in Long Street. And what about when you go shopping?

Regardless of where it is, imagine if that space was abruptly taken away from you. Now imagine that there are no alternatives – not just in that street, but in the whole town.

Because more than just residents will be affected by the disappearance of the long stay car park. The whole economy of the town could see an impact.

It was the owner of the Filling Station sandwich shop in Silver Street who said that while it may seem like a small issue, if people can’t find somewhere to park they will just go somewhere else altogether.

The ripple effect of the loss of 82 parking spaces could affect Dursley in a way beyond anyone’s belief.

It doesn’t have to be the same car park, but a valid alternative must be offered.
