MEMBERS of a committee for a swimming pool in Sharpness are set to swim the width of the Channel– completing the whole 21 miles in their 12.5 metre pool.

The seven committee members of Sharpness Committee Swimming Trust will be taking on the massive task this month to boost funds for the community pool.

The team comprising Andy Harvey, James Collett, Matt Thompson, Wayne Bateman, David Ashford, David Wiggall and Lucy Biddle will share the load by swimming a mile (128 lengths) at a time.

They will start at 8pm on Friday, July 10, swim all through the night and finish on Saturday evening with a big celebration.

Fun and games for the public will start at 9am on the Saturday morning when anybody can join the team for breakfast. There will also be a picnic at the pool followed by a tug of war, game of rounders and much more.

Lucy Biddle said: “Living so close to the River Severn, Sharpness Docks, the marina and canal means it is vitally important for our children to learn to swim and feel safe in the water.

“Sponsorship will ensure that every child has swimming lessons by helping towards the running costs and maintenance of the pool.

“We also plan to use any money raised for training life guards or pool supervisors so we can open to the public.”
