A MAN who suffered serious head injuries in the seven-car crash on the M5 on Saturday is no longer in a critical condition.

The 23-year-old man from Coventry was taken to Southmead Hospital following the crash after sustaining head injuries.

A 19-year-old woman who was a passenger in the same car was also taken to Southmead and remains in a serious condition after suffering pelvic injuries.

Fourteen other people suffered minor injuries in the crash and were treated by paramedics at the scene.

A spokesman for Gloucestershire police said that “rubbernecking” drivers whose actions when passing incident had a detrimental effect on their driving were being sent letters of intended prosecution.

Thus far no one has been arrested in connection with the pile-up near Michaelwood Services and the police investigation is ongoing.

The pile-up happened on Saturday (August 1) afternoon when five cars and two lorries collided on the southbound carriageway of the M5.

The southbound carriageway remained closed for more than six-hours whilst all of the vehicles were recovered with traffic being diverted through the service station. The northbound carriageway was also briefly closed to enable two air ambulance helicopters to land.

Police are appealing for witnesses - including a man stood on the nearby footbridge connecting the northbound and southbound service stations and witnessed the entire incident - to come forward.

Anyone who can help the investigation team is asked to call 101 and quote incident 214 of August 1.
