BISHOP of Gloucester Rachel Treweek paid a visit to a deanery in Wotton-under-Edge and revealed with whom she would most like to be stuck in a church.

The first female diocesan bishop spent two days in Wotton and addressed a special meeting of Deanery Synod, which encompasses 46 parishes spread from Slimbridge to Chipping Sodbury, on Monday, February 8.

After speaking to the group Bishop Rachel spent an hour answering questions, which ranged from straight-forward to rather unusual.

When asked about the challenges of being the first female diocesan bishop, she revealed that one of them was “selecting a hat”.

She went on to talk about the difficulty of taking on such a significant role while staying true to herself and her beliefs.

Bishop Rachel added that she is keen for everyone across the deanery to look into themselves and see what talents they have that can be offered to the church and community.

The final question asked the bishop who she would most like to be locked in a church with. Her first thought was Bishop Desmond Tutu, who she came to know in 1994 when she spent a placement in his South African diocese. She added that she would also be happy with a “lively group of children”.
