ON THURSDAY the Gazette announced its support for the Meningitis Now campaign ‘Give Children a Voice’.
The decision to join this crusade against the department of health came naturally because, ultimately, what other choice is there?
The argument for making the Men B vaccine more available is one of compassion – a desire to protect our fellow human beings, and in particular our children, against the ravages of a devastating infectious disease. The argument against is purely financial.
Earlier this week our government voted to renew the UK’s nuclear weapons system, Trident, at a current estimated cost of £31 billion. Let’s just review that figure one more time: £31 billion.
We’re not going to argue for or against the value of a nuclear deterrent system; that is a job for others. But we do feel the need to point out the inherent absurdity in a country that can find funds for weaponry capable of levelling cities but cannot find enough money to vaccinate our children against an often fatal disease.
