The Sound of Music

Starring

BBC1’S The Voice Runner-Up Lucy O’Byrne as Maria

Coronation Street’s Andrew Lancel as Captain Von Trapp

The Bristol Hippodrome

Tuesday, August 30 – Saturday, September 3, 2016

AS A fan of the original The Sound of Music film, I was slightly trepidatious about the mishandling of a classic.

Gratifyingly, there were parts of the performance that were so close to the film version, they were word for word, intonation for intonation.

Alarmingly there were parts that were swapped around and even (shock horror) entirely new!

However, all was forgiven, because the casting of this musical was impeccable.

Lucy O'Bryne who plays Maria Rainer was a joy to listen to, her voice able to stand up to Julie Andrews' high barre.

The Mother Abbess played by Rebecca Caine also had a stand out singing voice, able to fill the theatre with strong notes.

The younger children, played by a selection from the 18 child actors, showed perfect comedy timing and the eldest daughter Liesl played by Annie Holland was positively entrancing, the dance scene with Rolf Gruber played by Kane Verrall a real highlight.

The musical accompaniment was a pleasure to listen to, the scenery simple and effective and the costumes discreet and appropriate.

I am sure we have not heard the last of many of these young actors.

The audience was swept along from the very beginning, truly feeling involved and invested, provoking a spontaneous standing ovation at the curtain call.

Highly recommended.
