IN OCTOBER 1986, a Yate youngster whose eyes were used to save the sight of another child after his death in a road accident was remembered by his first aider friends.
At a ceremony at Shireway Community Centre in Yate, Miss Myra Meredith, area commissioner for the Eastern area of St John Ambulance, presented a trophy in memory of Stewart Davis to Mrs Jacqueling Woolacott, leader of the Yate Badger Sett.
Stewart, 6, (six) of Cheshire Close, Yate, was a keen member of the Badgers, the junior branch of St John Ambulance.
Stewart was in collision with a car near his home on September 4 and died shortly afterwards in Frenchay Hospital from his injuries.
He carried a donor card, and his corneas were transplanted into the eyes of a child with failing sight.
The trophy is in the form of a ceramic badger mounted on to a glass dome and will be presented each term to the most caring Badger in the Sett.
Miss Meredith said: “It is unusual for a child so young to have such a great understanding of the need for transplants and what the caring Stewart showed in his short life is an example to us all.”
Stewart was a keen member of Yate Badger Sett, a the junior branch of St John Ambulance, and carried a donor card.
