TRAFFIC lights will remain in place on the A38 at Berkeley between the first and second phases of work after the northern bridge was deemed not safe for traffic.

The original plan was to remove the signals following the completion of the first phase of works next month but they will now remain in place until the second phase commences in early January.

Improvements are planned to the light control system over the bridge to allow traffic to flow more smoothly.

Phase one work included utility improvements and the resurfacing the southbound bridge as well as preparing the northbound bridge for removal.

Work is being completed currently to make sure the bridge is ready for removal as part of phase two of the work.

A full road closure is likely to happen in February when the old bridge will be removed and the new bridge is put into position, although this depends on permissions from Network Rail. All work is due to be completed by May.

Cllr Nigel Moor, cabinet member for fire, planning and infrastructure, said: “This is important and complex work. I’m pleased that good progress has been made to make the risks of winter working less severe and allow the team to get on with the project.

“I’m very grateful to road users for their continued patience and look forward to the infrastructure of the area being completed to improve access for residents and businesses.”
