A YOUTH project which works across the Stroud district has been honoured at an awards ceremony in London.

The Door, based in Stroud, which supports people from 11 to 25-years-old and their families picked up the Employer of the Year accolade at the prestigious Christian Youth Work Awards on Friday.

About half of the charity’s 21 staff started out as members of its volunteer team, which now consists of 80 people.

Award organisers recognised the commitment to personal, professional and spiritual development for all team members, the family feel, and celebratory events which often involve the eating of cake together.

It was also commended for the growth of young people into leadership roles.

Collecting the award business development director, Barrie Voyce said: "This award is for the whole team and their dedication to being the best they can be."

Director of service delivery Victoria Robson added: "I'm so proud of the team and all they've achieved this year - The Door is a great place to work"

The Door has been operating from its Stroud town centre base since 1991 and currently runs youth clubs, young parents groups, girls groups, and job clubs from seven youth and community centres across the district, including Cam and Dursley.

It provides one-to-one mentoring, support groups for parents and a parenting training course.

Volunteer mentors, fundraisers and trustees as well as a paid part-time youth worker are currently being sought by the charity.
