AVID astronomers will be able to spot Neptune alongside Venus in the skies over Gloucestershire for the next couple days.

Neptune will be next to a particularly bright star – which is the planet Venus – in the south west.

Martin Sinton, co-founder of the Cam and Dursley Astronomy Club advises stargazers: “All you need is decent binoculars and look for the faint bluey/green object next to Venus which will be shining brightly.

“It will be over 30 times more distant than the sun.”

Forecasts are predicting excellent visibility tonight, although the clouds will gather across the South West throughout the night.

From Stroud the pair will become visible at around 16.48pm as the dusk sky fades, 27 degrees above your southern horizon.

They will then sink towards the horizon, setting at 20.45pm.

Venus will be at mag -5.2, and Neptune at mag 7.9, both in the constellation Aquarius.

The pair will be close enough to fit within the field of view of a telescope, but will also be visible through a pair of binoculars.

At around the same time, the two objects will also share the same right ascension – called a conjunction.
