WORK to revitalise a popular BMX track in Dursley has been completed.

Dursley Town Council funded the £12,000 renovation of the facility which took about two weeks to complete.

The track has been regraded and the corners and bends have been resurfaced to create a longer-wearing surface with the aim of reducing future maintenance costs.

Clark and Kent Contractors, which built the BMX track used at the London 2012 Olympic Games, carried out the works.

Renovation of the track is the first phase in a number of planned improvements at the Highfields Play Area which has been run by the town council since it secured the site on a 25-year lease from Stroud District Council last summer.

Town mayor Cllr Neil Grecian said: “I am pleased to see the first stage of our improvements completed at Highfields Play Park and trust that they will be well used.”

The track had only received limited maintenance works since it was built and was prioritised as needing attention by councillors.

Chairman of Dursley Town Council’s Green Spaces committee, Cllr Alex Stennett, said: “The BMX track is a well-used facility by both locals and those further afield.

“The investment in keeping it in good condition is well worth it as it keeps it usable and safe for all”.

The town council has plans for further improvements this year with new goal posts being installed, repairs to the surface of the football pitch area and the installation of new signage in the pipeline.

It will also be arranging a community day in the spring, to ask residents for their views on the play area work.
