PLANS are underway to build a BMX course and pump track on the Wotton Community PARC site.

Wotton Community Sports Foundation (WCSF) who have a long-term lease for the site, have already built a skatepark, rugby pitch, 3G artificial pitch and an artificial turf pitch for hockey and now aim to expand the range of activities available for young people in the town.

The BMX track will be a 200-metre long S-shape suitable for amateurs and more experienced riders, the pump track will provide a riding service for people of all ages, even those who do not own a BMX.

Barnaby Beere, who has been WCSF chairman for more than seven years, told the Gazette: “We're really excited about this new project, and we're sure that lots of local riders of all ages will want to use the new facilities, which will neatly complement the existing skatepark.

“We were overwhelmed by the community support that helped us to build the skatepark and safe path, and hope that we can use the enthusiasm for these new facilities to help us reach our £21,000 fundraising target.

“We have some great facilities now but we are trying to make sure there is something available for as many people as possible.

“Our tracks have been designed and we're checking prices for the build with local construction companies, our previous planning approval for the tracks has lapsed so we shall be reapplying as soon as possible, we're confident it will go through smoothly.”

The 14-member strong WCSF hope to start building the new course by this September but if not then next April – when the weather is more suitable.

Many of Wotton’s sports teams have been active in the procurement of further facilities such as Wotton Rovers, the rugby team and hockey club.

A further scheme the foundation hope to introduce is a sensory garden to aid those suffering with dementia which would complement the 500 saplings which have been planted on the site.

The WCSF, who became a registered charity in 2007, claim that visitor numbers to the 38-acre PARC (People, Activities, Recreation and Community) now reach around 3,000 each week in peak times.

South Gloucestershire Council pledged £220,000 to the site in January last year following two developments in Charfield.
