GLOUCESTERSHIRE Constabulary had been in contact with a man from Wotton-under-Edge prior to his death near Cam and Dursley Station in March.
As a result it referred itself to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) for investigation.
Geoffrey Leyland died on March 20 and his death is being treated as non-suspicious.
An inquest has been opened and a hearing is expected to take place in August.
A spokesman for Gloucestershire Constabulary said: "As part of a mandatory requirement in the case of the death or serious injury of a person following police contact, Gloucestershire Constabulary referred itself to the IPCC in relation to a man who died on a railway line near Stroud on March 20.
"The IPCC has deemed the matter suitable for local investigation by Gloucestershire police.
"It would be inappropriate to comment further while this process is ongoing."
