A 24-YEAR-OLD Cam man who denies attempting to abduct a child on in February this year was told today that his trial will take place on September 18.

Sam Hewings, of Hadley Road, Cam, pleaded not guilty at Gloucester Crown Court to attempted abduction after prosecutor, Giles Nelson, amended the charge from abducting a 13-year-old girl to attempting to do so.

At an earlier hearing the court was told that although Hewings had been diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome, and may require the assistance of an intermediary at his trial, he is mentally fit to enter pleas and be tried.

Mr Nelson today told the judge, recorder Frank Abbott "we say that the defendant was going to meet her at Gloucester Railway Station, and that there was a sexual motive to that meeting."

Mr Nelson stated that he believed the trial would last two to three days.

The judge said to Hewings: "Your trial date is September 18. Hopefully now everything is ready to proceed. In the meantime you will be remanded in custody."
