PLANNING permission has been granted for the development of a new long-stay car park in Dursley.

Earlier this year it was revealed that Dursley Town Council had secured an agreement with the owners of the former Gazette offices in Long Street to purchase the site as long as approval was given for its car park plans.

The council's application, which had drawn dozens of letters of support from town residents, was submitted formally at the end of June and today has been given the go-ahead by Stroud District Council planners.

The facility will provide spaces for 47 cars with additional provision for motorcycles and cyclists.

Permission from Stroud District Council comes subject to eight conditions and is in place for three years.

Amongst the conditions is one that the car park cannot be used until the cycle storage facilities outlined in the plans are installed.
