PUPILS and staff at a primary school in Wotton-under-Edge welcomed more than a dozen Japanese students into their lessons earlier this month.

The visit to The British School was made while they were on an exchange trip to the UK with nearby Katharine Lady Berkeley’s secondary school (KLB) which has been running for the last 20 years.

During their time at the school, they played simple games with the youngsters before giving presentations, in English, on Japanese culture.

Debra Swain, senior teacher at The British School, said: “This was a great occasion for our children to meet other young people from a very different culture.

“Year 5 and 6 have been learning about Japan and its culture in their topic, and this was an excellent opportunity to deepen their understanding.

“The British School pupils and staff are very grateful to Ms De Silva of KLB and the staff of Hikawa High School, for giving us this chance to connect with Japan.”
