A schoolboy from Yate is taking on the world for Team GB in what is an unfamiliar sport to many.

Arno Turner, 16, took up Target Sprint 6 months ago when his coach saw him shooting whilst at Army Cadets and he hasn't looked back since.

Target Sprint is a discipline that combines air rifle shooting with running. Competitors run 400m around a track, before shooting down 5 targets. They then repeat this again, before ending with another 400m sprint to the finish.

Arno is already ranked second in Great Britain is his age range 14-21, whilst also competing internationally on World Tours Championships as well.

"I've always been really sport, really liked running and keeping fit." Arno said when asked why he took the sport up.

"About 6 months ago I was looking for a different sport. I was a really keen swimmer but I was starting to get injuries from that so thought I would look for something else.

"I currently train with team GB once a month, as well as training with my own team Fedgemoore.

"Over the past few months I've been all over Europe. I have competed in Germany, Holland and Italy.

"In the competition in Italy I competed in my age range and finished 13th, that was against people from all over the world.

"I am also really excited to say that I will be going to South Korea in September to compete internationally then as well."

However the trips to the World Tours are taking their toll on Arno financially. Target sprint currently receives no government funding at all, so the student from Cotswold Edge Sixth form is currently looking for sponsorship himself.

"All of the competitions in total has cost me around £4,500 so I am looking for sponsors and donations so I can continue to follow something I really enjoy doing.

"I understand that it is difficult, but I don't really expect much. Just something to help me with some of the costs. It'd really help me personally.

"I think that eventually if I continue with the Target Sprint I will have to become a lot more picky. I just won't be able to carry on considering the price of everything."
