Wapley Bushes Local Nature Reserve, and the Orchard for the Future, have been recognised in the Green Flag Award Schemes as one of the best in the world.

The reserve, to the south of Yate toward Westerleigh, is among a record-breaking 1,883 UK parks and green spaces that will today receive a prestigious Green Flag Award. This is the mark of a quality park or green space.

The international award is now into its third decade. It is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

The exact award that the reserve has received is the Green Flag Community Award. A category for green spaces that are managed by voluntary and community groups.

There are only eight Community Awards in the whole of the South West, with Wapley Bushes holding the only Green Flag Award of any kind in South Gloucestershire.

It is not the first time the reserve has won the award, with committee member Paul Hulbert stating his 'delight' at the fact the woodland has been recognised.

"We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the seventh time," he said.

"We know how much quality green spaces matter to residents and visitors, and this award celebrates the dedication that goes into maintaining Wapley Bushes to such a high standard.

"The real credit for this award must go to our hard-working volunteers, and to Dodington Parish Council for their unfailing practical and financial help."

To maintain the condition of the reserve there are regular work mornings held. The next one being Sunday, September 9. Extra volunteers are miore than welcome to join and can contact Paul Hulbert on 01454 315851 for more details.
