The co-founder of Gloucestershire engineering firm Renishaw, John Deer, has been presented with an honorary degree.

Deer was awarded a Doctor of Engineering by Bristol University at a ceremony on Monday, July 16.

He was given the award in the Wills Memorial Building during the graduation ceremony for the faculty of engineering.

Deer began his engineering career as an apprentice mechanical engineer and joined Rolls Royce in 1960 .

He was also involved in the development of Concorde and the Harrier Jump Jet before he co-founded Renishaw with Sir David McMurtry in 1973.

In 1987 he was one of four people to receive the MacRobert Award and in 2012 was a joint recipient of the Swan Medal from the Institute of Physics.
