ON Tuesday, August 14 a South West In Bloom Judge visited Kingsgate Park in Yate.

Friends of Kingsgate Park and Yate Town Council have been maintining the site since 2003.

The park is again entered into the 'Pride in Parks' award category, with last year the Royal Horticultural Society awarding Kingsgate with five stars.

The judge who visited the park this year was Stephanie Purser, she was shown around the site by Tim Fairhead from Southwold Branch of the Avon Wildlife Trust.

The 'Pride in Parks' awards are specifically aimed at showcasing community involvement in the area.

It also looks to consider the standard of the park or green space itself.

The assessment process looks to provide valuable feedback to the participants.

Kingsgate has made some developments over the last decade which have helped to increase the number of people who attend the park.

The building of the climbing frame and the water fountains have drawn specific praise from residents in the area.

Sue Swanborough of the Friends of Kingsgate Park said: "We look to make it an enjoyable park for all ages.

"We maintain the raised garden beds, the general look of the park working closely with Yate Town Council.

"We hope to attract younger people to help us with looking after this wonderful park.

"Last time was wonderful, but we have to wait until February 2019 to know how we have done this year."
