A WOMAN from Yate is holding an event to raise money for Cancer Research UK, in memory of a popular charity worker.

Moyà Simms, of Yate, passed away earlier this year after a battle with cancer.

The Yate resident had been part of the areas biggest charity fundraising event, the Relay For Life, since 2015.

She was part of the well-known 'Silver Strollers' team that does may fundraising events around Yate and Bristol in aid of Cancer Research UK.

Sheila Thompson, a friend of the popular fundraiser, told how she was very committed to supporting the cause.

"Moyà spent many hours with collecting buckets at various venues, including Tesco and Broadmead," she said.

"Each year Moyà has tirelessly visited all the local shops and pubs asking for prizes for the raffles we hold at our fund raising events.

"We've organised concerts breakfasts afternoon teas as well as a barn dance, call my bluff wine tasting and lots more."

Moyà was married to Brian Simms, with the pair forming part of the team that has helped to raise over £20,000 for Cancer Research UK.

"Shortly after our first relay in 2015, Moyà became ill and eventually cancer was diagnosed," Sheila continued.

"This did not stop her tremendous efforts and she continued to walk and support the team until just eight weeks before her death in May."

Now, in memory of Moyà, Sian Walters and her Yate and Chipping Sodbury Good Aftrernoon  choir are putting on a charity concert with the the Cameo Orchestra with all proceeds going to Cancer Research.

The concert will take place on Saturday, October 13 at 7.30pm at St Mary's Church.
