AS WINTER approaches it may be important for some Cotswold residents to have their chimney swept and this is for several reasons.
Despite the soothing and rustic feel of a wood-burning fire, there are some risks associated with the much-loved tradition.
Tom Kimber works as a self-employed chimney sweeper in the Stroud district and outlined the dangers that fires can pose.
“If chimneys are not swept, poisonous combustion gases become trapped and evidently this is harmful to one’s health,” explained Mr Kimber.
“Regular sweeping removes creosote, soot, bird nests and blockages – this keeps the chimney functioning well and stops deadly carbon monoxide build-ups.”
In addition, Stroud’s own chimney sweeper detailed how if you sweep your chimney at least once per year, it will improve the efficiency whilst preventing possible fires.
Tom goes on to advise how best to use your wood-burner and what ingredients to use.
"Using smokeless fuel, season wood, house coal and specially designed wood-burning fires is the best option," added Mr Kimber.
