THERE have been nominations all around South Gloucestershire in the 'OSCARS' for amateur dramatics.

The Rose Bowl Awards have been running since 1963, and are open to any amateur dramatic or operatic club in Bristol and surrounding areas.

This year groups from the area have a combined total 15 nominations across three different groups.

Sodbury Players, based in Chipping Sodbury received four nominations. Their pantomime production of Peter Pan in January of this year has been nominated for the Chris Harris award for Best Pantomime.

Their production of Private Peaceful in May was nominated for best Technical Achievement, and also Best Dramatic Performance.

Nicky Shipton of the group also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Penny in The Edge of Darkness.

In a statement, a spokesman for the group revealed their pride at the nominations.

"It is a fantastic achievement for the group to be nominated for these incredibly prestigious awards," he said.

"We always work hard to put on shows that the public find entertaining and we as a group are challenged by. Well done to all involved in the shows that have been nominated, particularly Nicky who we are immensely proud of.

"Sodbury Players are looking forward to being involved in the awards ceremony later this year."

Thornbury Musical Theatre and their youth group have received an impressive nine nominations, with their panto of Dick Whittington also being nominated for Best Pantomime and Best Publicity.

Their youth performance of HONK! was also nominated for the Coup De Theatre Award, whilst Immy Godfrey and Talia Nicholls also received nominations for Best Actress in a Youth Production for the show.

HONK!, it was eventually revealed, was nominated for the Best Youth Production.

The adult group also received three nominations for their production of the Wedding Singer, with Marvin Harris and Emily Jones being nominated for Best Actor and Actress in a Musical, as well as the show itself being nominated for Best Musical Production.

Cotswold Players were also rewarded with three nominations, with Janette Deacon and Sarah Kilmister awarded for their performances as supporting actresses in The Government Inspector.

Claire Greenwood received a nomination for Best Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Adelaide in Guys and Dolls.

Another special mention must go to Northavon Youth Theatre Company, who received two nominations for their performance of Les Miserables. 

The group, which covers ages 11-18 and has been running in Thornbury for over 40 years, saw their lead character Jean Valjean, portrayed by Freddie Dixon-Lewis, nominated for Best Actor in a Youth Production. 

Les Miserables itself was nominated for Best Youth Production, after their sell-out run.

The Rose Bowl Awards are due to take place on Sunday, October 21 at the Mercure Grand Hotel in Bristol.

Around three hundred and fifty people from theatre companies around the South West are expected to attend.
